Innovative hydrogel patch breaks into male fertility market
Tuesday 18th May 2010
BioCity-based Allmi-Care Limited has signed an agreement to supply its cooling hydrogel patches to Babystart Ltd, a leading pre-conception fertility products supplier.
The first of its kind on the market, the FertilMate™ patch will help reduce testicular temperature to improve spermatogenesis. The initial consignment of patches was delivered to Babystart’s distribution centre in Dudley, West Midlands this month marking the beginning of a worldwide (excluding the US) distribution agreement for Allmi-Care.
With over 16 years’ experience in the field of therapeutic patch development, Allmi-Care has created a product range for both pain relief and aromatherapy applications. The introduction of the cooling patches for use in such a significant consumer market is a major boost for the BioCity-based company, and will take Allmi-Care to the next stage of business growth.
“We are constantly looking for new and innovative uses for our patches,” says founding Director Alan Marsh who was initially contacted by Babystart via the web. “Ideas can come from anywhere and at any time, but with BioCity’s help we have made great strides in both our product innovation and business contacts. You could call it ‘guided serendipity’.”
With further help of the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet, also located in BioCity, Allmi-Care has begun working with two leading East Midlands universities to look at how applied nanotechnology could enhance the hydrogel ingredients to give the patches more features and extra benefits for customers. They are also looking into developing an environmentally-friendly hydrogel patch derived from renewable sources. The result will be a further innovative range of medical products for OTC and prescription use by major pharmaceutical suppliers.
BioCity CEO Dr Glenn Crocker comments: “Allmi-Care was one of the earliest BioCity companies and has made the most of everything a bio-incubator can offer. Alan regularly attends seminars and networking events, and consults our in-house advisers as well as the iNet team. I am delighted to see further development of the Allmi-Care product range.”

About FertilMate™

A relationship between experimental elevation of testis temperature and poor semen quality has been known for over eighty years. Experience shows that prolonged reduction of the temperature of the scrotal area by about 2 to 5 degrees C may be effective in reversing male infertility. For published study data to support this theory see www.fertilmate.co.uk
