Job Description

The role of Kitchen Assistant has 2 main areas of responsibility. Firstly, the preparation of food for the on-site café and conferencing facilities and secondly the delivery service excellence.                  

The job description is split into the two areas of responsibility below:

Food Preparation

Providing support on a daily basis for the head chef to provide quality, fresh food for BioCity Nottingham’s tenants and conference delegates. The activities to do this will include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing, cooking and presenting food and beverages, quickly and efficiently, for the on-site café and conference rooms, meeting our high standards
  • Opening and closing of the kitchen in the head chefs absence
  • Following the food specifications laid out by the head chef
  • Managing stock, including ordering, wastage control and deliveries
  • Supporting the head chef in carrying out their duties
  • Assisting in keeping the kitchen clean, hygienic and tidy, at all times
  • Monitoring equipment and raising any maintenance issues with the head chef
  • Operating kitchen equipment safely, being mindful of the health and safety of both yourself and your colleagues at all times
  • Maintaining personal knowledge by completing in-house training and other courses
  • Maintaining compliance of the kitchen and café area with all relevant food safety regulations

 

Delivery of Service

Drive excellent customer service throughout the on-site café and conference facilities. The activities to do this will include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring all food, drink and associated products are served to the highest standard 
  • Making coffees, teas and other hot drinks
  • Maintaining BioCitys image, making sure all areas of the café are clean and well maintained
  • Being presentable at all times
  • Creating a warm, friendly atmosphere in the café, having a “can do” attitude
  • Feeding back any service or food related complaints to the head chef
  • Attending meetings with the head chef to appraise performance
  • Cash handling, ensuring the tills balance on a daily basis
  • Making all tenants and customers of BioCity feel valued using your adaptive interpersonal skills

 

Hours of Work: Mon – Fri  8.30am – 3.30pm

At the Kitchen Assistant you will follow the head chef’s instruction and have a positive, flexible attitude, working to the highest levels to ensure that BioCity standards are maintained at all times.

The ideal candidate must have a passion for cooking and food. Those with industry qualifications (NVQ Level 2) and drive will be placed at the front of the queue. Attention to detail and efficiency is a must. A keen eye for presentation and keeping your workspace in a perfect condition at all times. Knowledge of HACCP and hygiene standards is a must.

The ideal candidate will also enjoy good coffee and have a passion for baking; you will be adaptable to challenges in a new environment and a keen ambassador for the BioCity brand. You will also provide impeccable and friendly customer service while keeping our café looking immaculate. Candidates must have details of referees. Those with previous experience in independent cafés are admirable.

Ideal candidate will have the following qualification and attributes:

  1. Experience in cafes, coffee shops and restaurants (min 3 years)
  2. Experience with customer service (min 3 years or course qualified)
  3. A strong grounded CV, with good references
  4. Firm knowledge of HACCP
  5. NVQ level 2 in Food and Beverage or Professional Cookery
  6. Intermediate Food Hygiene Level 2
  7. First aid qualified
  8. English and Maths GCSE or equivalent grade C or above
  9. Right to work in the UK
  10. UK driving licence
  11. Good English language skills both spoken and written
  12. Shows creativity and passion for food
  13. Adaptable
  14. Confident
  15. Social
  16. Strong sense of self being
