BAST Inc is the first spin-off business launched after the announcement of the closure of the AstraZeneca site at Charnwood, Leicestershire, UK. The founder of BAST Inc is Joachim Grevel, who started and managed a similar business under the identical name in Houston, Texas, from 1991 to 1998. “My entrepreneurial spirit again kicked into place soon after the shock of the site closure,” says Joachim. “Times have changed, and there are now many businesses offering pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic analysis services to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. BAST Inc shall expand these basic services to offer optimal trial designs and simulations of the probability of success. Here we have a unique opportunity to assemble an expert team of former AZ scientists who will deliver cutting-edge services to support decisions in the portfolio management of big pharmaceutical companies as well as big investment decisions of small biotech companies.” The research side of BAST Inc collaborates with other small to medium size enterprises (SME) and universities to develop new statistical tools in parameter estimation and optimal design, funded by grants of the European Union under the FP7 and IMI calls.
