New minister for the East Midlands Gillian Merron yesterday predicted research centre Biocity could give Nottingham a global profile. It houses small research and development companies and the services they need. The cluster of companies located there employ 330 people. During a visit to Biocity, Ms Merron said: "What they are doing here is cutting edge. It is impressive in terms of its contribution to Nottingham and the East Midlands. This is about putting Nottingham on the map internationally as a place to do business." Ms Merron was keen to stress the investment and support Biocity has already received from Government, but hinted her role as regional minister could help safeguard future backing by putting its case forward. She said: "When we are looking at drawing up a budget it is important to think about places like Biocity." Ms Merron was interested in Biocity's plans to expand what it offers to young people. She said: "The challenge we have is to encourage young people to think about science. I am talking to Biocity about how it can take the message out across the region for young people. For example, we are talking about a laboratory bus."
