Mironid: Head of Laboratory Manager Role

This exciting opportunity is to provide key facilities and logistics support. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Biology to develop and implement the day-to-day running of Mironid’s Biology facility.


To provide key facilities and logistics support to the Head of Biology in the day-to-day running of Mironid’s Biology facility.

Responsible for the efficient and effective day-to-day functioning of Mironid’s biology facility as regards budgetary control and to include but not restricted to, for example, equipment ordering and maintenance, consumable ordering, Health and Safety, fire and radiochemical issues, solvent and clinical waste disposal.

Interacting with various support services such as those for IT, health and safety, fire, radiochemical and genetic manipulation.

To be responsible for Risk assessment, COSHH and DSEAR form generation and management.

To provide support for Mironid’s biology discovery and drug screening teams.

To become involved in the scientific basis of Mironid’s biology discovery and drug screening efforts so as to promote, develop and extend the scientific and drug discovery portfolio of the company.

To undertake high quality bench science to support Mironid’s R&D programme.

It is anticipated the laboratory management role would constitute some 60% of effort and wet bench science some 40% of effort.


 Principal Responsibilities

To support the Head of Biology to ensure the smooth and cost-effective working of Mironid’s Biology Laboratory Facility by taking responsibility for all of the financial, technical, Health and Safety and related issues.

To support the Head of Biology in executing the biology R&D strategy to agreed quality standards in order to meet objectives defined by the Board.

To undertake high quality bench science to support Mironid’s R&D programme.

To work with the Head of Biology and designated consultants to identify and develop collaborations with CROs and academics/clinicians so as to underpin, extend and leverage the biology strategy.

To provide full technical and financial support for the in-house biology R&D team.

To liaise with the equivalent post-holder in the Mironid chemistry team to ensure that the Company’s R&D milestones are achieved in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Full participation in science team meetings.

To provide appropriate technical support to the Company’s patent attorneys to ensure effective protection of the IP portfolio.

Skills and Experience


  • Experience of either Academia or Pharma industry working in research laboratories focussed on cellular / molecular investigations.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing aspects of laboratory finances, ordering and maintaining equipment, ordering consumables, waste management and managing health and safety issues.
  • Demonstrable experience of successfully negotiating with suppliers of services, equipment and consumables.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in budget setting and management.
  • An ability to maximise the use of resources and budgets to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Well-developed people management skills with the ability to build and manage successful, ambitious and cohesive teams.
  • Ability to communicate at relevant level for the key audience (e.g. ability to discuss and present technical details and requirements) both internally and externally.
  • Ability to work in a team to manage complex projects through to successful delivery against technical and commercial milestones.
  • Must be driven, energetic and focused.
  • A desire to continue involvement in wet laboratory work alongside management of facilities at Mironid’s Biology Laboratory.
  • Experienced in engaging intellectually with the underlying basic science so as to be fully involved as part of the Biology Team.
  • Familiarity with COSHH form generation and management.
  • Computer literate with excellent spreadsheet and related experience.
  • Numerate with necessary financial skills.
  • Attention to detail with an ability to succinctly summarise the current state of affairs.


  • Technical expertise in one or more of molecular biology / cell biology / immunology / pharmacology skill areas.
  • Experience of being involved in studies leading to the generation of high quality research publications.
  • Formal training in the regulatory execution of Health and Safety / Radiation / Genetic manipulation issues.
  • Experience of dealing with on-line ordering systems.
  • A Batchelor’s degree (or equivalent or higher) in an appropriate molecular / cellular discipline (e.g. Biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology or similar).
  • Experience of techniques such as cell culture, immunoblotting, plasmid preparation and transfection techniques.
